چکیده

Humans share about 99% of their genomic DNA with chimpanzees and bonobos; thus, the differences between these species are unlikely to be in gene content but could be caused by inherited changes in regulatory systems. Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) comprise approximately 5% of the human genome. The LTRs of ERVs contain many regulatory sequences, such as promoters, enhancers, polyadenylation signals and factor-binding sites. Thus, they can influence the expression of nearby human genes. All known human-specific LTRs belong to the HERV-K (human ERV) family, the most active family in the human genome. It is likely that some of these ERVs could have integrated into regulatory regions of the human genome, and therefore could have had an impact on the expression of adjacent genes, which have consequently contributed to human evolution. This review discusses possible functional consequences of ERV integration in active coding regions.

Pathological and Evolutionary Implications of Retroviruses as Mobile Genetic Elements

Retroviruses, a form of mobile genetic elements, have important roles in disease and primate evolution. Exogenous retroviruses, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), have significant pathological implications that have created a massive public health challenge in recent years. Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), which are the primary focus of this review, can also be pathogenic, as well as be...

HESAS: HERVs Expression and Structure Analysis System

SUMMARY HESAS (HERVs Expression and Structure Analysis System) database was developed to understand the human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) that have an effect on the expression of human functional genes. The database products are generated by the exon-based expressed sequence tag clustering and reconstructing of partial HERV structures that result from various mutations during primate evolut...

Human endogenous retrovirus family HERV-K(HML-5): status, evolution, and reconstruction of an ancient betaretrovirus in the human genome.

The human genome harbors numerous distinct families of so-called human endogenous retroviruses (HERV) which are remnants of exogenous retroviruses that entered the germ line millions of years ago. We describe here the hitherto little-characterized betaretrovirus HERV-K(HML-5) family (named HERVK22 in Repbase) in greater detail. Out of 139 proviruses, only a few loci represent full-length provir...

Human Endogenous Retroviruses and Evolutionary Analysis of Their Long Terminal Repeats

Almost half of human DNA sequences are derived from various types of transposable elements and more than 8% of them are endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) and their fragments [1]. Most of them stem from past retroviral infections of the germline cells of primates and consequent expansion in the genome by means of retrotransposition and stab inheritance. The structure of endogenous retroviruses is ...
